The defining combination of the SIGMA 12mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary is its ultra-wide 12mm focal length and bright F1.4 aperture. The wide perspective captures a large portion of the scene, while the large aperture allows photographers to work creatively in low-light environments.

This combination is particularly useful for night landscapes and astrophotography, where maintaining detail across the frame is important. The wide field of view also makes the lens practical for travel, interiors, architecture, group selfies and vlogging.

Optical Performance

High Resolution from the Wide-Open F1.4 Aperture

SIGMA developed the optical system around 14 elements in 12 groups, including two SLD elements and three aspherical elements. The arrangement is designed to deliver high optical performance across the image area, even when shooting at the wide-open F1.4 aperture.

The optical design also places particular emphasis on correcting sagittal coma flare. This is especially important for astrophotography and night scenes, where small points of light can reveal optical imperfections. SIGMA’s advanced simulation technology and coating are also used to help control flare and ghosting.

Autofocus & Video

Fast Autofocus with Minimal Focus Breathing

The SIGMA 12mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary uses a stepping motor to drive its lightweight focusing lens. The result is high-speed, high-precision autofocus suitable for still photography as well as video production.

For creators, SIGMA has also designed the lens to suppress focus breathing, helping minimize changes in angle of view when focus shifts. This supports smoother and more natural-looking focus pulls during video recording.

Portability & Protection

Compact, Lightweight and Ready for Outdoor Shooting

Despite combining an ultra-wide 12mm perspective with a large F1.4 aperture, the lens is designed to remain compact and lightweight. The Sony E-mount version measures only 69.4mm in length and weighs 225g, making it easy to carry as part of a travel or creator setup.

The lens also features a dust- and splash-resistant structure and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the frontmost element. These features provide additional protection for outdoor photography, although SIGMA notes that the construction is not waterproof.
